THE CUCKOO SONG lyrics by Shakespeare, music by Diane Nalini When daisies pied and violets blue And lady-smocks all silver-white And cuckoo-buds of yellow hue Do paint the meadows with delight The cuckoo then on every tree, Mocks married men, for thus sings he: “Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo!” Oh word of fear, Unpleasing to a married ear! When shepherds pipe on oaten straws, And merry larks are ploughmen's clocks, When turtles tread, and rooks, and daws, And maidens bleach their summer smocks The cuckoo then, on every tree, Mocks married men; for thus sings he: “Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo!” Oh word of fear, Unpleasing to a married ear! -- from Love's Labour’s Lost

Sigh No More 05:03
SIGH NO MORE lyrics by Shakespeare, music by Diane Nalini Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more. Men were deceivers ever, One foot in sea, and one on shore, To one thing constant never. Then sigh not so, but let them go, And be you blithe and bonny, Converting all your sounds of woe Into hey nonny, nonny. Sing no more ditties, sing no more Of dumps so dull and heavy. The fraud of men was ever so Since summer first was leafy. Then sigh not so, but let them go, And be you blithe and bonny, Converting all your sounds of woe Into hey, nonny, nonny. -- from Much Ado About Nothing

FOR LOVE OF YOU lyrics: Shakespeare, music: Diane Nalini When I consider everything that grows Holds in perfection but a little moment, That this huge stage presenteth nought but shows Whereon the stars in secret influence comment When I perceive that men as plants increase, Cheered and check'd even by the selfsame sky, Vaunt in their youthful sap, at height decrease, And wear their brave state out of memory Then the conceit of this inconstant stay Sets you most rich in youth before my sight, Where wasteful Time debateth with Decay To change your day of youth to sullied night And all in war with Time for love of you, As he takes from you, I engraft you new. -- Sonnet XV
4.
RAIN EVERY DAY lyrics: Shakespeare, music: Diane Nalini When that I was and a little tiny boy, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, A foolish thing was but a toy, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came to man’s estate, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, ’Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gate, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came, alas! to wive, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, By swaggering could I never thrive, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came unto my beds, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, With toss-pots still had drunken heads, For the rain it raineth every day. A great while ago the world begun, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, But that’s all one, our play is done, And we’ll strive to please you every day. -- From Twelfth Night

Desi's Blues 04:36
DESI'S BLUES lyrics: Shakespeare, music: Diane Nalini A poor soul sat sighing by a sycamore tree, Sing all the green willow, Her hand on her bosom, her head on her knee, Sing willow, willow, willow. The fresh streams ran by her and murmured her moans, Sing willow, willow, willow Her salt tears ran from her and soften'd the stones Sing willow, willow, willow Sing all a green willow must be in my garland, Let nobody blame him, his scorn I approve I called my love false love, but what said he then? Sing willow, willow, willow If I court more women, you'll couch with more men. -- From Othello
6.
MISTRESS MINE lyrics by Shakespeare, music by Diane Nalini O Mistress mine where are you roaming? O stay and hear, your true love's coming, That can sing both high and low Trip no further pretty sweeting Journeys end in lovers' meeting Every wise man's son doth know. What is love, 'tis not hereafter Present mirth, hath present laughter What's to come, is still unsure In delay there lies no plenty Then come kiss me sweet and twenty Youth's a stuff will not endure. -- From Twelfth Night
7.
THE FABULOUS MINSTREL lyrics by Shakespeare, music by Diane Nalini Orpheus with his lute made trees And the mountain tops that freeze Bow themselves when he did sing: To his music plants and flowers Ever sprung; as sun and showers There had made a lasting spring. Every thing that heard him play, Even the billows of the sea, Hung their heads and then lay by. In sweet music is such art, Killing care and grief of heart Fall asleep, or hearing, die. -- From Henry VIII
8.
TAKE THOSE LIPS AWAY lyrics by Shakespeare, music by Diane Nalini Take, oh, take those lips away That so sweetly were forsworn And those eyes, like break of day, Lights that do mislead the morn; But my kisses bring again, Seals of love, though sealed in vain. -- From Measure For Measure
9.
THE LOVER AND HIS LASS lyrics by Shakespeare, music by Diane Nalini It was a lover and his lass, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, That o’er the green cornfield did pass, In springtime, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding Sweet lovers love the spring. Between the acres of the rye, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, Those pretty country folks would lie, In springtime, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding Sweet lovers love the spring. This carol they began that hour, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, How that a life was but a flower In springtime, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding Sweet lovers love the spring. And therefore take the present time, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, For love is crownèd with the prime In springtime, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding; Sweet lovers love the spring. -- From As You Like It

THE BEAUTY OF YOUR EYES lyrics by Shakespeare, music by Diane Nalini Who will believe my verse in time to come, If it were filled with your most high deserts? Though yet heaven knows it is but as a tomb Which hides your life, and shows not half your parts. If I could write the beauty of your eyes, And in fresh numbers number all your graces, The age to come would say 'This poet lies; Such heavenly touches ne'er touched earthly faces.' So should my papers, yellowed with their age, Be scorned, like old men of less truth than tongue, And your true rights be termed a poet's rage And stretched metre of an antique song: But were some child of yours alive that time, You would live twice, in it, and in my rhyme. -- Sonnet XVII

Be Merry 03:38
BE MERRY lyrics: Shakespeare, music: Diane Nalini Do nothing but eat, and make good cheer And praise God for the merry year When flesh is cheap and females dear And lusty lads roam here and there So merrily, and ever among so merrily Be merry, be merry, my wife has all For women are shrews, both short and tall ’Tis merry in hall when beards wag all And welcome merry Shrove-tide Be merry, be merry -- From Henry IV, Part II
12.
SHE LOVES ANOTHER lyrics: Shakespeare, music: Diane Nalini Hey, Robin, jolly Robin, Tell me how thy lady does. My lady is unkind, perdie. Alas, why is she so? She loves another. -- From Twelfth Night
13.
GOODBYE TO THE DEVIL lyric: Shakespeare, music: Diane Nalini I am gone, sir And anon, sir I'll be with you again, in a trice, Like to the old vice, Your need to sustain; Who with dagger of lath In his rage and his wrath Cries, ah ha! to the devil: Like a mad lad, Pare thy nails, dad Adieu, good man devil. -- From Twelfth Night
14.
TILL THE WORLD GOES ROUND lyrics: Shakespeare, music: Diane Nalini Come thou monarch of the vine Plumpy Bacchus, with pink eye ! In thy vats our cares be drowned With thy grapes out hairs be crowned Cup us till the world go round Cup us till the world go round! -- From Antony and Cleopatra
15.
UNDER THE BLOSSOM lyrics: Shakespeare, music: Diane Nalini Where the bee sucks, there suck I In a cowslip’s bell I lie There I couch when owls do cry On the bat’s back I do fly After summer merrily Merrily, merrily shall I live now Under the blossom That hangs on the bough -- From The Tempest

When Diane launched the album at Guelph’s “Shakespeare: Made In Canada” festival in 2005, the Kitchener Waterloo Record wrote: “A gifted arranger and vocalist… Nalini made an auspicious Guelph concert debut… the highlights were three passages from literature she set to jazz – “Sigh No More” from Much Ado About Nothing, and “The Lover and His Lass” from As You Like It, as well as Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Cradle Song.”
